About Adrian – The Gate Guy

Adrian, owner of AutoGate Northern Ireland

Hello, I'm Adrian

I own and run AutoGate Northern Ireland. Some of my customers call me the Gate Guy, and to be honest the name's stuck – which suits me fine, because gates are what I do.

I've spent 25 years in the electric gate industry, installing new gates, automating existing ones and repairing just about every make of gate motor on the market. I like solving problems, I like doing a job properly, and I like it when a customer's gate just works, day in, day out, for years.

My background

I'm an engineer by training. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA, both from Ulster University, and City & Guilds qualifications in electrical installation and in inspection and testing.

That matters with gates. A powered gate is a heavy machine with electrics, safety devices and moving parts, sitting outside in our weather. Getting it right takes mechanical know-how, electrical know-how and a good understanding of the safety rules.

Why safety is a big deal for me

There have been serious accidents involving powered gates in the UK and Ireland, and too many gates out there are still fitted without the right safety devices or proper testing.

That's why I'm a founding member of BIGAA – the British and Irish Gate and Access Association. We promote safe installation, help buyers understand what a good job looks like, and warn people off cheap kits and cowboy installers.

On my own jobs, that means:

  • the right safety devices on every gate – photocells, safety edges and more where needed
  • force testing to BS EN 12453
  • electrical work to BS 7671
  • a proper handover, with a Declaration of Conformity and the manuals

More on this in gate safety and the law in Northern Ireland.

How I work

  • You deal with me. From the first call to the handover.
  • Straight answers. If something isn't worth doing, I'll tell you – even if it means less work for me.
  • Good kit. DEA System for most new installations, Fadini for heavy-duty hydraulics.
  • I fix what others fit. I repair all the major brands, whoever installed them.
  • Fully insured. Public liability and employers' liability insurance.

Where you'll find me

I'm based at 49a Belmont Road, Belfast BT4 2AA, and work across Belfast, Lisburn, Newry, Armagh and the towns in between. See the areas I cover.
