Bangor and the North Down coast are a short run from me up the A2. It's a great place to live – but the sea air and the wind off Belfast Lough are hard on gates, so getting the materials and the automation right matters more here than almost anywhere.

Gates that cope with the coast
- The right materials. Aluminium, or steel that's galvanised and powder coated, stands up to salt air. Bare or just-painted steel won't last. See gate materials for durability
- Sized for the wind. Solid gates near the shore catch a lot of wind, so the motors, hinges and posts need to be up to it – or a design with some gaps can help
- Protected electrics. Control boxes and cables sealed properly against salty, damp air
- Regular care. A rinse with fresh water now and again, and a yearly service. See winter gate care

Planning in Bangor
Most gates won't need planning permission, but it's worth checking the height next to the road, and whether your property is listed or in a protected area. See planning permission for electric gates.

Questions people ask me
What's the best gate material near the sea?
Aluminium, or galvanised and powder-coated steel.
Will the sea air damage my gate motor?
It can speed up wear, which is why good sealing and regular servicing matter on the coast.
Do you cover all of North Down?
Yes – Bangor, Holywood and the surrounding area.
