An electric gate is a machine that lives outdoors in Northern Ireland weather and gets used every day. Like your car, it needs a service to stay safe and reliable. Skip it, and small problems – a worn hinge, a dirty photocell, a tired battery – turn into breakdowns at the worst possible time.

I service electric gates of all the major brands, for homes, businesses, farms and apartment developments.

What's included in a service

Every gate is different, but a typical service covers:

  • Safety devices – photocells, safety edges and other sensors tested and cleaned
  • Force testing – checking the closing forces against BS EN 12453
  • Motors and gearboxes – checked for wear, noise and leaks, and adjusted
  • Gates, hinges and posts – checked for sagging, wear and loose fixings, and lubricated
  • Sliding gates – track, wheels, rack and end stops checked and cleaned
  • Control board and electrics – connections, settings and water ingress checked
  • Remotes, keypads and intercoms – tested
  • Manual release – tested, so you know it'll work when you need it
  • Battery backup – tested, if fitted

You get a written record of what was checked, the test results and anything that needs attention. See automatic gate servicing.

How often?

For most homes, once a year. Busy commercial or shared gates need servicing more often – usually every three or six months, depending on how much they're used. Read more: how often should electric gates be serviced?

Gates at work and shared sites

If your gate is at a business, a car park or an apartment development, the people responsible for the site have legal duties to keep it maintained and safe, under the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 and the related workplace regulations. A regular service with written records is the simplest way to show you're doing that. See maintenance contracts.

Taken over a gate you know nothing about?

Moved into a house with electric gates, or taken over a site? I can inspect the system and give you a written report on its condition and safety. See gate inspections and reports.

Between services

There are a few simple, safe things you can do yourself – keeping photocells clean, clearing leaves from tracks and keeping an eye out for anything unusual. See simple gate care you can do yourself and looking after your gates through the winter.

Questions people ask me

How much does an electric gate service cost?

It depends on the type and number of gates. Give me a call and I'll give you a price.

Do you service gates you didn't install?

Yes – all the major brands, whoever fitted them.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

For gates at workplaces and shared sites, the people in control of the site must keep them maintained and safe. For private homes it's not a legal requirement, but it's the best way to keep the gate safe for your family and visitors.

What happens if you find a safety problem?

I'll explain it, tell you what's needed to fix it and give you a price. If the gate isn't safe to use, I'll tell you straight.
